Determining the Function Type from an Equation, Graph, or Table: Sample Algebra 1 EOC Questions

Before students can model with a function they have to recognize one on sight. Given an equation, a graph, or a table of inputs and outputs, students decide whether the relationship is linear, quadratic, cubic, exponential, absolute value, or radical.

How the Algebra 1 EOC tests this benchmark

The EOC never asks students to write the function here, only to classify it. Graphs and equations stay close to the parent functions x, x squared, x cubed, square root, cube root, absolute value, and the exponential parents, shifted or reflected. Tables use successive input values, and a quadratic table must show outputs that both rise and fall, so no item can be answered by checking one direction alone.

Skills students need

  • Classify a function from its equation
  • Recognize the shape of each parent function on a graph
  • Use first and second differences in a table
  • Spot a constant ratio as the signature of an exponential

Question 1EasyDrop-Down
Figure: a table with columns x and f(x), and rows 0 and 4; 1 and 9; 2 and 14; 3 and 19.
The input-output table shown gives the outputs of a function. The first differences of the outputs are , so the type that could represent the table is .
