Equivalent Algebraic Expressions Using Properties of Exponents: Sample Algebra 1 EOC Questions

This is the algebraic half of the exponent work: simplifying monomials with variables, negative exponents, and nested powers into a single equivalent expression. Students combine several exponent properties in one problem rather than applying one rule at a time.

How the Algebra 1 EOC tests this benchmark

The item specifications require either a rational non-integer exponent or the use of more than three exponent laws in a single item, so these are multi-step by design. The EOC will not ask students to apply fractional exponent properties to variables. Multiple choice and equation editor items dominate, with distractors built from the classic errors of adding exponents when multiplying bases and multiplying them when raising a power.

Skills students need

  • Simplify monomials with one or two variables
  • Apply the product, quotient, and power of a power rules together
  • Rewrite negative exponents as positive ones
  • Recognize an equivalent form of a variable expression
