Writing and Solving Two-Step Equations: Sample FAST Questions

Students write and solve two-step equations in one variable where all terms are rational numbers, in the forms px ± q = r and p(x ± q) = r. The two forms call for different first moves: undo the addition before the multiplication in one, distribute or divide first in the other.

How the FAST tests this benchmark

FAST items include equation editor questions solving for the variable and multiple choice items asking which equation models a word problem. Solutions can be negative or fractional, so an answer that looks ugly is often the correct one.

Skills students need

  • Solve two-step equations in the form px ± q = r
  • Solve two-step equations in the form p(x ± q) = r
  • Write and solve two-step equations from a real-world situation
  • Check a solution by substituting it back into the equation
