Solving Real-World Problems with Proportions: Sample FAST Questions

Students apply their understanding of ratios to set up and solve proportions in real-world situations, such as how long it takes to mow 35 lawns at a rate of 4 lawns in 3 hours and 45 minutes. The graded skill is writing the proportion with matching units in matching positions, then solving it.

How the FAST tests this benchmark

FAST items are word problems answered in the equation editor, plus multiple choice items asking which proportion correctly models the situation. The trap is inverting one of the two ratios so the units no longer line up across the equals sign.

Skills students need

  • Set up a proportion from a real-world situation
  • Solve a proportion using cross products or scaling
  • Check that units are aligned on both sides of a proportion
  • Convert time and rate values before comparing them
