Surface Area of a Cylinder Using a Net: Sample FAST Questions

Students find the surface area of a right circular cylinder using the figure’s net. Unrolling the cylinder shows two circles and one rectangle whose length is the circumference of the circle, which is where the lateral area comes from. The formula is provided rather than memorized.

How the FAST tests this benchmark

The FAST shows a net or a labeled cylinder and asks for the total surface area in the equation editor. Two errors dominate: forgetting one of the two circular bases, and using the radius instead of the circumference for the length of the rectangle.
