MA.8.F.1.1 · Linear Relationships, Data Analysis, and Functions

Functions, Domain, and Range: Sample FAST Questions

Functions are the big new idea in 8th grade math: a rule where every input has exactly one output. Students decide whether a set of ordered pairs, a table, a graph, or a mapping diagram is a function, then identify its domain and range.

How the FAST tests this benchmark

FAST items include multiple choice questions about whether a relation is a function, hot text items where students select the domain or range values, and matching items sorting several relations at once. Domain and range are reported as a list or an inequality, never in interval notation at this grade.

Skills students need

  • Determine whether a relation is a function
  • Apply the vertical line test to a graph
  • Identify the domain of a relation
  • Identify the range of a relation
