Transformations on the Coordinate Plane: Sample FAST Questions

Applying a transformation with coordinates is the largest geometry benchmark in 8th grade: translations shift points, reflections flip them across an axis or a line parallel to one, rotations turn them about the origin, and dilations scale them from the origin.

How the FAST tests this benchmark

This benchmark is the most graphic response heavy on the grade 8 FAST, with students plotting an image on a coordinate grid, alongside equation editor items for image coordinates. Reflections stay on the axes or lines parallel to them, rotations are 90, 180, 270, or 360 degrees about the origin, and dilations are centered at the origin.

Skills students need

  • Apply translation rules to coordinates
  • Reflect a figure across the x-axis, the y-axis, or a parallel line
  • Rotate a figure 90, 180, or 270 degrees about the origin
  • Dilate a figure centered at the origin
