Scientific Notation and Comparing Magnitudes: Sample FAST Questions

Scientific notation is how 8th grade math writes very large and very small quantities, like 3.2 × 10^8 or 5.1 × 10^−6. Students convert both directions between standard form and scientific notation, and determine how many times larger or smaller one number is than another.

How the FAST tests this benchmark

FAST items are mostly equation editor questions converting a value or reporting a power of 10, plus multiple choice comparisons. Watch the calculator display: it shows scientific notation as E notation, so 2.3147E27 has to be rewritten as 2.3147 × 10^27 before it counts.
