Factoring Polynomials Over the Real Numbers: Sample Algebra 1 EOC Questions

Factoring rewrites a sum as a product, and it is the gateway to solving quadratics. Students pull out a greatest common factor, factor trinomials, recognize a difference of squares or a perfect square trinomial, and factor four-term expressions by grouping.

How the Algebra 1 EOC tests this benchmark

Expressions are capped at four terms with integer coefficients. A greatest-common-factor-only item must have three or four terms or involve at least two variables, so the easy two-term case does not appear alone. Quartic polynomials in quadratic form are in scope; the sum and difference of cubes are explicitly out of scope. Equation editor and multiple choice items dominate.
