Strength and Direction of a Correlation: Sample Algebra 1 EOC Questions

A scatter plot with a line of fit tells students two things: which way the relationship runs and how tightly the points cluster around the line. This benchmark also carries the reminder that a strong correlation does not prove one variable causes the other.

How the Algebra 1 EOC tests this benchmark

The EOC never uses the correlation coefficient and never asks students to compute a line of fit, a slope, or a residual. Residuals are shown graphically instead, and the strength has to be recognizable by eye. Direction is tied to the sign of the slope in context, and causation questions stay at the level of naming another factor that could explain the pattern.
