Interest is the exponential model students are most likely to meet outside a classroom. Given a principal, a rate, and a time, they compute a balance with simple interest and with interest compounded a set number of times per year, and compare the two.

How the Algebra 1 EOC tests this benchmark

Both interest formulas are on the Algebra 1 reference sheet, so the item is about setting them up rather than recalling them. Compound interest items always give the rate, the time, and the number of compoundings per year, and never ask students to solve for time or for the number of compoundings. Continuous compounding with base e is out of scope for Algebra 1.
