Percent Problems: Tax, Tips, Discounts, Interest, and Percent Change: Sample FAST Questions

Students solve multi-step real-world percent problems covering discounts, markups, sales tax, tips, fees, simple interest, percent increase, percent decrease, and percent error. They work forward (find the total after 8% tax) and backward (the total after tax was $54, so what was the original price).

How the FAST tests this benchmark

This is one of the heaviest grade-7 benchmarks on the FAST, drawn twice per practice test, with word problems in equation editor and multiple choice form plus a share of multipart items. Reverse-direction problems are the trap: students subtract the percent from the final amount instead of dividing by the multiplier.

Skills students need

  • Find a total price after tax, a tip, or a fee
  • Find a sale price after a discount or a marked-up price
  • Compute simple interest using I = Prt
  • Find percent increase, percent decrease, and percent error
  • Work backward from a final amount to the original amount
