Comparing Two Data Sets: Sample FAST Questions

Given two numerical or graphical representations of data, students use measures of center and variability to make comparisons, interpret results, and draw conclusions about the two populations. Displays are limited to histograms, line plots, box plots, and stem-and-leaf plots.

How the FAST tests this benchmark

On the FAST, students read two displays side by side and answer multiple choice items about which group scored higher typically or which group was more consistent. The trap is answering with a center when the question asked about spread, or the reverse.

Skills students need

  • Compare two data sets shown as box plots
  • Compare two data sets shown as histograms, line plots, or stem-and-leaf plots
  • Use measures of center to compare typical values
  • Use range and interquartile range to compare consistency
