Identifying Translations, Reflections, and Rotations: Sample FAST Questions

Given a figure and its image, 8th graders name the single transformation that produced it: a translation slides, a reflection flips, and a rotation turns. All three are rigid motions, so the image stays congruent to the original figure.

How the FAST tests this benchmark

The FAST shows a preimage and an image on a grid and asks multiple choice or matching questions naming the transformation. A reflection across a vertical line and a 180 degree rotation can look alike, so students check whether the orientation was reversed.

Skills students need

  • Identify a translation from a preimage and image
  • Identify a reflection and the line it was reflected across
  • Identify a rotation and its angle
  • Explain why rigid motions preserve congruence

Question 1EasyMultiple Choice
Point AA at (1,5)(1, 5) is moved to point AA' at (1,8)(1, 8). The image and preimage are congruent. Which describes the shift that maps AA to AA'?
Figure: a coordinate plane from x = -10 to 10 and y = -10 to 10 showing the points (1, 5), (1, 8).
