Estimating Population Values and Margin of Error: Sample Algebra 1 EOC Questions

A sample survey gives a mean or a percentage, and a margin of error says how far the true population value might be from it. Students use both to estimate a population total, mean, or percentage and to state the interval the true value most likely falls in.

How the Algebra 1 EOC tests this benchmark

The margin of error is always given on the EOC and never computed, and sample sizes are at least 100. Items give both the sample statistic and the margin, then ask for the interval, the population estimate, or which conclusion the data supports. Multiple choice and equation editor items are typical.

Skills students need

  • Estimate a population total from a sample
  • Build an interval from a mean and a margin of error
  • Interpret a margin of error in context
  • Judge which conclusions a sample supports
