Transformations of a Function Graph or Table: Sample Algebra 1 EOC Questions

Replacing f(x) with f(x) + k, k times f(x), f(kx), or f(x + k) moves, flips, stretches, or squeezes the graph in a predictable way. Students identify that effect on a graph or in a table without re-plotting the whole function.

How the Algebra 1 EOC tests this benchmark

The EOC limits this to linear, quadratic, and absolute value functions, and every item gives both the original function and the notation for the transformed one. The classic trap is inside versus outside the parentheses: f(x + k) shifts horizontally and in the opposite direction from what the sign suggests. Graphic response and matching items are common here.

Skills students need

  • Identify a vertical shift from f(x) + k
  • Identify a horizontal shift from f(x + k)
  • Recognize a vertical stretch, compression, or reflection
  • Apply a transformation to a table of values

Question 1EasyEquation Editor
Figure: a table with columns x and f(x), and rows 0 and 5; 1 and 2; 2 and 1; 3 and 2; 4 and 5; 5 and 10.
The table defines the function f(x)f(x). The function g(x)=f(x1)g(x) = f(x - 1). What is the value of g(4)g(4)? Enter your answer as an integer.

Enter the number only. Do not include units like $, %, or ft²
