MA.7.AR.1.1 · Number Sense and Operations and Algebraic Reasoning
Students apply the properties of operations to add and subtract linear expressions with rational coefficients, in the forms ax + b and b − ax. They combine like terms and distribute a negative across an entire expression, for example rewriting (7x − 4) − ½(2 − x) as (15/2)x − 6.
On the FAST, students see multiple choice items picking the equivalent simplified expression and equation editor items where they type it themselves. Subtraction is the reliable trap: only the first term after the minus sign gets negated unless the student distributes across both.
