Choosing an Appropriate Measure of Center or Variation: Sample FAST Questions

Students decide which measure of center (mean or median) or measure of variation (range or interquartile range) best summarizes a numerical data set, taking the context and any outliers into account. The question is which statistic fits the data, not how to compute it: a skewed salary list calls for the median, a symmetric one for the mean.

How the FAST tests this benchmark

FAST items give a context and a data set, often with an outlier planted in it, and ask multiple choice or multiselect questions about which summary is appropriate and why. Students are not asked to compute the statistic here, so an answer that just does the arithmetic misses what the item wants.
