Interpreting and Comparing Probabilities: Sample FAST Questions

Given the probability of a chance event, students interpret how likely it is to occur and compare the probabilities of different events. They place a probability on the scale from impossible at 0 to certain at 1, and they compare values written as fractions, decimals, and percentages.

How the FAST tests this benchmark

The FAST uses multiple choice items describing an event as impossible, unlikely, equally likely, likely, or certain, plus items ordering several probabilities. This benchmark is drawn twice per practice test, and comparisons often mix forms, so 2/5 has to be weighed against 45% inside one item.

Skills students need

  • Place a probability on the scale from 0 to 1
  • Describe an event as impossible, unlikely, likely, or certain
  • Compare probabilities written as fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Interpret P(event) notation
