Students apply the formula for the area of a circle, including the area of a fractional part such as two slices of a 12-inch pizza or a quarter of a circular garden. They also work backward from a given area to the radius or diameter, which brings in a square root step.
FAST items are equation editor questions computing an area from a labeled circle, and fractional-part problems appear regularly rather than as edge cases. The trap is squaring the diameter instead of the radius, which makes the answer four times too large.
