Students find the area of polygons and composite figures by decomposing them into triangles or quadrilaterals. They split an irregular shape into pieces they already know how to measure, find each area, and add. Coordinate-plane placement and missing-dimension work sit outside this benchmark.
How the FAST tests this benchmark
On the FAST, students see a labeled composite figure with an equation editor answer for the total area. The errors that show up are counting a shared interior edge as if it bounded area, and double counting a piece where two shapes overlap.
